The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act was signed into law by President Obama on April 21, 2009 and takes effect October 1, 2009. The Service America Act reauthorizes and expands national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
- The King Holiday and Service Act of 1994, passed by the U.S. Congress, gives the Corporation for National and Community Service responsibility for establishing Martin Luther King Day as a day of service.
- Federal legislation requires each state to create a State Service Commission to administer national service programs and promote volunteerism at the state level.
