WORDS IN ACTION: activists

"Be activists. Take on the big inequities. It will be one of the great experiences of your lives....You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with very little effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry on longer." -- Bill Gates, Harvard Commencement address 6.07.07.

WORDS IN ACTION: common good

"A rising tide lifts all the boats."

“We are not 50 countries—we are one country of 50 States and one people. And I believe that those programs which make life better for some of our people will make life better for all of our people.” --President John F. Kennedy, Remarks upon approval of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, August 17, 1962, Pueblo, Colorado.

WORDS IN ACTION: citizen journalism

Citizen journalism is rapidly emerging as an invaluable part of delivering the news. With the expansion of the web and the ever-decreasing size and cost of camera phones and video cameras, the ability to commit acts of journalism is spreading to everyone. Arianna Huffington
